What are the benefits of music therapy treatment for people with

Depression?

  • Depression can slow motor (movement) processes in the brain.  Music therapy interventions can be used to both increase the speed of a person’s movement and improve their mood.  This effect can increase motivation and ability to carry out everyday tasks.

  • Adapted lessons allow people to learn a new skill at a supportive pace.  Playing an instrument or singing activates more areas of the brain at one time than any other activity.  The benefits of learning to sing or play an instrument include improved attention span, improved executive function skills, improved self-confidence, and increased self-awareness.

  • Lyric discussion and music analysis can be used to discuss and address underlying issues and triggers related to depression.
